How to use the Word Frequency Counter

Paste your text and choose Count words. Words are sorted by how many times they appear, with ties in alphabetical order. Tick “skip very common English words” to hide filler such as “the” and “and” and reveal the topic words, and raise the minimum length to ignore short words.

Examples and uses

Use it to spot overused words in an essay, to see which topic words dominate an article, or to compare vocabulary between two drafts.

Limitations and good to know

Words are detected as runs of letters and numbers (apostrophes inside a word are kept, so “don’t” is one word). The common-word filter covers English only. Languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese or Japanese, are not split into words. The percentage is the share of counted words, not of all words, when filters are on.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CSV the full list?

Yes. The download contains every unique word, not just the top results shown.

Does it work for other languages?

It counts any language that separates words with spaces. The common-word filter is English only.

Is this the same as keyword density?

It gives the raw counts and shares. Keyword density tools usually focus on chosen phrases.
