WRITING TOOL
Word & Character Counter Pro
Get a full breakdown of your text: words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and more. Everything is counted in your browser as you type.
How to use the Word & Character Counter Pro
Paste or type into the box and the figures update instantly. Words are runs of non-space characters, sentences end at . ! ?, and paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute and speaking time about 130, which suits a presentation or voice-over.
Set a character limit to see how many characters remain, or by how much you are over. Characters are counted as visible symbols, so an emoji counts as one character.
Examples and uses
- Meta description: aim for roughly 150–160 characters so search results do not cut it off.
- Speech: a 3-minute talk is about 390 words at a relaxed speaking pace.
- Essay: check paragraph and sentence counts alongside the word limit.
Limitations and good to know
Different platforms count characters differently (for example, some count links or emoji with fixed lengths), so treat the limit check as a guide and confirm with the platform. Sentence detection is based on punctuation and can over- or under-count abbreviations such as “e.g.”. For a simpler view, try the basic Word Counter.
Frequently asked questions
Does this save my text?
No. Counting happens locally and nothing is sent or stored.
How is reading time estimated?
Word count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded to the nearest second. Individual reading speeds vary.
Why do sentence counts sometimes look off?
Sentences are detected from punctuation, so abbreviations or text without punctuation can change the count.
