How to use the Age Calculator
Enter a date of birth. The second date defaults to today but can be any date, which is handy for working out age on a particular day such as a school cut-off, an event or a policy start date. Choose Calculate age.
Age is counted in complete years, then complete months, then remaining days. Month ends are handled carefully: a person born on 31 January who reaches 1 March is one month and one day old, because the month is counted to the last day of February first.
Examples and uses
Born 15 March 1990, as of 1 January 2025, the age is 34 years, 9 months and 17 days. Someone born on 29 February has their birthday counted on 28 February in non-leap years.
Limitations and good to know
The calculator uses calendar dates only and ignores time of day and time zones. Some countries or cultures count age differently (for example, counting a newborn as one year old), and this tool uses the standard international method. Dates are read in the Gregorian calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the “Age at date” field to any valid date after the date of birth.
How are leap years handled?
The calculation uses real calendar lengths, including leap years. A 29 February birthday is treated as 28 February in non-leap years.
Is my date of birth stored?
No. It is processed in your browser and not saved or sent anywhere.
